We offer legal advice and educational services to organisations across Australia, and advocate for improved standards and legal frameworks for the not-for-profit sector.

We also run a certified legal training social enterprise and deliver a dedicated service for Local Aboriginal Land Councils in NSW.

About the role

In this role, you’ll work to

  • Working as a part of a team, you’ll play a key role in the provision of legal advice services to community organisations. In this role, you’ll:
  • Triage enquiries from not-for-profit organisations (including assessing matters eligible for free legal assistance)
  • Provide legal advice and information to eligible community organisations
  • Facilitate referrals to Justice Connect member law firms and barristers
  • Develop and deliver legal training for community organisations (face-to-face and online) as part of Not-for-profit Law’s social enterprise
  • Create and improve online information and self-help products to build the legal capacity of community groups
  • Contribute to strategic engagement, law reform and advocacy activities of Not-for-profit Law.

Our ideal candidate

You’ll bring to the team experience in the following areas:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to give accurate and practical legal information and advice 
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively in a team environment 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, including in particular Aboriginal people, in a professional and respectful manner 
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to stay focussed under pressure and to appropriately prioritise competing demands 
  • Comfort working in agile practice with openness to pivoting as organisational and team priorities change 
  • Drive, focus, good judgment and a sense of humour 
  • Commitment to Justice Connect’s vision, strategy and values, including a commitment to social justice 
  • Sound computer skills within a legal practice environment (knowledge of Microsoft Dynamics desirable)

Expertise that you may have that would support our team:

  • Eligible to hold an unrestricted practicing certificate

Candidates will need to demonstrate commitment to Justice Connect’s vision, strategy and values.

A week in this role

If you were here last week, you would have:

  • Worked closely with the paralegal to triage enquiries from community organisations that have come in that day.
  • Worked on your casework and provided a variety of legal assistance to organisations including advice, legal information and/or pro bono referral across a broad range of laws.
  • Collaborated with other lawyers in the team to prepare for and deliver legal training via a webinar format to organisations across Australia.
  • Met with your colleagues at an intake meeting to discuss workload, practice management issues and whether we can make any system-level improvements to the way we work.

Important role information

The position reports to the Lawyer (level 2) Not-for-Profit Law program.

Employment is full time, fixed term until 30 June 2026.  

The salary for this role is $107,531.21 per annum plus superannuation which will be paid according to statutory requirement, annual leave loading and generous salary packaging options  

This role can be based at our Melbourne or Sydney CBD offices with 40% of the month in the workplace with hybrid working arrangements.
